Volunteer Fireman's Day - January 10
What is a Volunteer Fireman?

Well, first of all there always busy, Up to there neck in jobs to do,
They must earn a living every day, Keep there family, too.

They like hanging 'round the FireHouse, As the gang chews the fat,
Playing cards and watching T.V., Having drills and things like that.

It's true there not home a lot, But rather at the station,
And when convention time rolls 'round, There there, That's there vacation.

They known to be awakened by the alarm, Late at night,
The sound thats there warning, There's a fire somewhere to fight.

There highly trained in fighting fires, They've passed the EMT test,
In Fact in all emergencies, You can bet there one of the best.

Most times there rather happy, Taking pride in there fire team,
In the hose that must fold perfect and the engines that must gleam.

There splendid in there uniform when they parades in competition,
Always hoping that there company will win highest recognition.

They only asks just once a year for the citizen's donation,
To help improve equipment and to operate the station.

They devote much time and effort, To the biggest job in town,
So there a mighty important person to always have around.

Now fellows, Since this verse is made in modest salutation,
We wish you one and all to know, You're important to our Nation.

And so in closing may we add, Our thanks and our esteem,
To the men & Woman who are living up to a little Child's dream.

Firefighter's Prayer

When I am called to duty, God,
Where ever flames may rage
Give me the strength to save some life,
Whatever be its age.
Help me embrace a little child
Before it is too late;
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert,
And hear the weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling and
To give the best in me;
To guard my every neighbor and
Protect his property
And if, according to your will
I have to give my life;
Please bless with your protecting hand
My children and my wife.

The Old Volunteer Fireman

Yes, Mr. Citizen, I’m that Volunteer Fireman. I chew tobacco and I have one of those silly red lights on my Squad. I even blow my horn at you when I’m going on a call. Sometimes my siren wakes you up at night and, at times, you may have to wait at a light a little longer to let me by. But I’m not going to apologize.

You complain about me wasting your tax money, but don’t understand when I say I can’t tie equipment up pumping out your pool. You say I don’t know my job, but when you smell smoke at night and call me, suddenly I’m an expert. You complain because my boss lets me leave work for a fire and doesn’t let you leave for your social club meeting but you forget the night the plant caught fire and I saved your job.

You say I’m only in it for excitement, but you fail to see my tiredness and exhaustion following a fire. You say I like auto injuries and that death doesn’t bother me, but how could you understand my sleepless nights because of the life I couldn’t save. I pray that you and others in the community never need my services, and all I ask in return is that you pray for me while I do my job. I’m not a perfect person, Im just one of you and I’ll never say I am, but, yes Mr. Citizen, I’m a Volunteer Fireman, and pretty proud of it.
